Skilled to Build Michigan Foundation is a non-profit organization whose focus is raise awareness of skilled trades as a viable career option. Over the last decade the residential construction industry has seen a tremendous decline in skilled labor. At one point, residential construction was one of the hardest hit industries during the recession. Building permits plummeted from 40,392 single family homes in 2004, to an all-time low of 6,392 single family homes built in 2009.
But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We are projecting a slight growth in single family homes in 2017. The Home Builders Association of Michigan’s econometric model is estimating that 16,515 new single family home permits will be issued across the state of Michigan. This represents a 4.2 percent increase over 2016.
Based on an update recently presented at the Revenue Estimating Conference in Lansing, construction is projected to create 25,000 new jobs from 2017 until the end of 2019.
